Mastiffs are a breed of dog that you will absolutely fall in love with. They are very, very big, lovable, and the most wonderful pets you could want. But, you do have to make a commitment to this breed because they also have special needs that some other breeds may not have. Visiting several Mastiff kennels will give you the opportunity to see both full grown Mastiffs and puppies up close.

It is important to visit the breeder and parents of the puppies to get a feel for the kind of personality that your puppy will have. A red flag will be if the dogs are kept in pens or there are a lot of dogs crammed in an area. You really don’t want to get a Mastiff from a puppy mill. These wonderful, special dogs do not do well in crowded areas. When you visit a reputable breeder, they will love their Mastiffs and tell you everything you will want to know about the breed.

Mastiffs are a breed that shows all of their emotion on their face. They have the most expressive faces of any breed and when they are happy and in love with their owner, you can tell. The breeder will belong to a dog club and have the ancestry of the puppy’s parents available for you to look at.

These dogs live a long life when they are well cared for. Making sure that they have been checked for dysplasia, Willebrand’s disease, that they eyes are normal, and they have been tested for thrombopathia will cover the genetic conditions that the puppy may have. Making sure your puppy is healthy and doesn’t have any genetic conditions will save you money and heartache when you baby is in pain.

You puppy is going to grow very quickly. If you have a really small apartment or home you may want to wait until you have a larger space. Don’t get me wrong, your Mastiff will never complain about the home you are in, but they will be lots happier if they can go outside and lay on a sofa on the backyard porch.

The darling little puppy that you are holding will grow to the size of the mom and dad. This is important to remember when you are deciding on the puppy you want. Mastiffs are incredibly gentle, docile, and patient dogs. They are absolutely wonderful with kids of all ages. However, if you can’t stand a mess or drooling, you may want to select a dog breed that is smaller and doesn’t drool.

My Mastiff was a lap dog, he had his own sofa in the living room because he didn’t like laying on the floor. I had a king size bed because he like to sleep on the bed and a queen size bed wasn’t big enough for both of us. He snored and drooled and let the kids dress him up. He was the camel every year in the Christmas show because he was big and would let the kids tie a pillow on his back for a hump.

I had a small car, my dog sat in the back seat comfortably and three kids shared the front seat. When we got burgers, the dog had two happy meals when the kids had one. This is not the kind of dog that you cannot love and care for, they don’t ask for anything but your love and attention. If you are at Mastiff Kennels and realize that you are unable to make the kind of commitment required, it will be okay. For some people this is a breed that you love from afar. For others, like myself, there is no other breed that compares to a Mastiff.

There is just something about dogs mastiff that can melt a heart. These dogs are really big, loving, and the most wonderful pets that you could ever want. When you are decide to get a Mastiff it will be essential to visit several mastiff kennels.
