If compared, funerals held today are far different to those held during our grandparent’s era. Not only are they far more expensive, they’ve also become much more extravagant. Of course price depends on your preferences. We now look at a funeral as a way to celebrate the life of the deceased. During “grandpa’s days” funerals were very sad and upsetting affairs.

The cost of a funeral can be as different as night and day. You can purchase the most costly of caskets and spend thousands of dollars on flowers and other details; or you can be very frugal and go with just the necessities.

There are several options available with the memorial service itself. You can elect to have a viewing in the funeral home and a memorial service in the church of your choice, or you can have a memorial service at the funeral home. You can choose to include just family, or family and friends. It can be made private or public. The decision is up to you and your loved ones.

Most funerals have some kind of music whether the service is in the church or funeral home, and many times a friend or relative will provide the music. Music can be an important part of the service and very moving.

Another route some people take is to plan their own funerals before they pass away. By doing so, a person can design the ceremony to their own tastes, and alleviate the burden of planning that would otherwise fall to the bereaved at what is already a difficult time.

The funeral of a child is extremely difficult and needs to be handled sensitively by the funeral home.

At most funerals now there are people who like to get up and talk about the deceased person and tell highlights from their lives as they knew them. This is usually quite informative for people who did not know the deceased too well, and it is also an escape valve for friends and family members.

Lastly, people do not feel they have to always wear black at funerals anymore. Since it is a “celebration of life” for the deceased, bright clothing fits right in with that theme.
