The Canny Collar Uses The Soft Touch Approach To Training Your Dog

Posted by: Jerry Beckwire  :  Category: Dogs, Pets

Choose the canny collar for a gentle way to train your dog to not pull when going for a walk. This collar goes over your dogs’ nose and comes back around the head and neck so you can lead your dog softly. This collar is said to be for teaching your dog but with it softness you will probably use it every time you take your dog for a walk. You will see your dog go from one who used to take you for a walk to a dog who gently walks by your side.

The canny collar operates by putting pressure on the bridge of your dogs’ nose when he pulls. It does sit down low like a muzzle but rather in the middle of the snout under their eyes. Two straps come back around your dogs’ neck, which is where the leash attaches. When your dog pulls you he will feel pressure and when he stops so does the pressure.

The canny collar does not jerk your dogs’ head to the side like some training collars do. It works from both sides of your dogs head so the pressure applied is even. This saves our dog from any neck pain they may feel if being jerked too quickly to the side.

The part that goes around your dogs’ nose will not be able to be pawed off by your dog even if the leash is loose. This is one problem that owners find even if using a muzzle. It is a relief to find something that your dog will not be able to get off. Other than the easy walk harness the canny collar seems to be one of the only other comfortable training methods around.

Anyone who ever sold a no-pull training method always talked about the dog and what it would do for them. No one person ever said anything about how it would help the person walking the dog. As someone who owns a large dog I know the feeling of having your arm pulled so hard it feels like may come off, and the back pain that goes along with it. This will not happen to you any more after getting the canny collar. You will be able to take your dog for a walk and actually enjoy it.

The canny collar is a gentle way to get your dog to stop pulling you when on a walk. You will once again enjoy taking your dog for a walk after purchasing the canny collar.

Don’t Make These Mistakes When Keeping Cichlids

Posted by: Carey Malloy  :  Category: Pets

Learning how to keep tropical fish can be very rewarding but sometimes very troubling. Actually, cichlid care is completely different from the care of most tropical aquarium fish.

More and more novice aquarists are taking on the task of learning how to keep African and American cichlid fish, but most are just unsure of how to take care of these very unique and beautiful aquarium fish.

Cichlid Care Mistakes

So what are some of the usual mistakes that most beginner aquarium fish keepers make? One of the most common things that fish keepers do is the combining of African and American species in the same tank.

Pet stores make this error also! It breaks my heart to see these poor tropical fish in pet stores that are improperly kept. Both the Africans and American varieties that are kept together in the same tank are miserable and literally barely living. Their specific water chemistry requirements are very different and they just are not naturally supposed to be in the same environment.

What is another mistake that a lot of fish keepers are guilty of?

This is one of the most common mistakes that even the most experienced aquarist makes. Not making regular water change outs in their fish tanks. No matter what variety of tropical fish that you care for, routine water changes are literally the life-blood of all aquarium fish. Yep, it couldn’t be easier than that.

The truth is, novice aquarists just don’t know how to take care of their tropical fish much less make them thrive and even begin to breed. PH and salinity requirements are also very important. Take cichlid fish for example. Africans and Americans have very different water salinity requirements.

So where can you find more information on how to avoid making more mistakes when learning how to take care of your tropical fish at home? You need to find a good tropical fish care guide to make sure that your cichlids stay healthy and thriving for the next several years.

Developing Hen Coops And Maintaining Chickens With Regard To Amateurs

Posted by: Irvin Ewing  :  Category: Pets

Recently, I had a great opportunity to visit some buddies who pretty much “live off the land”. When I say “live off the land” they grow their own food and raise chickens and other animals. I noticed a few nicely built homes that had fences around them.

I was curious on what it was, and then my daughter (who is 2 years of age) told me “Chickens Daddy” immediately.

I was pretty amazed with how adequate they were. This reminded me of stories of the old days my grandma used to tell me about how there wasn’t any grocery stores around and how neighbors would trade their crops and chickens.

During this economy, I thought to myself what it would probably take to get a chicken coop started. I started to look around online to find out how popular this trend is getting. People are fed up with having 100.00 dollar grocery bills and the price of meat is stupid. (So what would I want to get this started?) I thought to myself. So I started performing some research. I wanted to get all the facts together with what my friend was telling me and find what all I’d need to do.

What came first the Chicken or the Coup?

I started thinking the very first thing I might must do was to find some recommendation on building a chicken coop. I mean what good is it to have chickens without a place to keep them? I searched around looking for the right plans and found one good site that taught me the easiest way to build a chicken coop step by step. I learned some vital tip when building a chicken coop that I didn’t know. As an important point, I really failed to know how complicated raising chickens could be for a beginner.

But, after you get the knack of how it is possible to get started it actually is a simple process after finding this out. These are some easy tips I learned that were critical when setting up your first chicken coop.

Protection:

When building you need a design that withstands the elements such as rain, sleet, snow and hail. Most significantly you wish to a design that protects your chickens from predators.

Cleaning:

You want to build a coop that provides proper ventilation and provides straightforward cleaning to spray off walls and roosts.

Tips On Taking Care Of Your Puppy’s Health

Posted by: Christian Velez  :  Category: Dogs, Pets

How much are you feeding your puppy? If you are simply going from the packaging label recommendations, you may be feeding your puppy too much or too little.

As you increase your puppy’s food intake, you’ll need to also make sure that he gets more exercise. Otherwise, he may become overweight, which can create numerous health problems, including heart problems, respiratory problems, and muscular problems.

Obesity in dogs is easier to avoid than to correct. If your puppy is being overfed, start slowly reducing his food until his weight becomes acceptable. If you aren’t sure what this is, be sure to have a vet take a look. If your puppy needs to eat more, increase his food for a couple of weeks until his weight gets to where it should be, than sustain the amount.

A puppy at a healthy weight is less likely to get sick then overweight and underweight puppies. Being at a weight that is too high or two low weakens the puppy’s immune system.

Are you taking your puppy’s temperature? This is important so you can nip any fever in the bud. Your puppy’s temperature should range from 99.5 – 102.5 degrees. You should check a couple of times each week.

Your vet can show you how to take a dog’s temperature. The thermometer will need to be inserted into the rectum, so be sure to have plenty of mineral oil or petroleum jelly on hand.

Three minutes will do it – any more and your puppy may get uncomfortable! Hopefully your puppy is not running a fever, but if he is, he should be seen by the vet right away.

It is imperative that only a rectal thermometer be used for this purpose. Oral thermometers will most likely give a false reading. You can purchase a rectal thermometer at most pet supply stores, or ask your vet for a recommendation.

Playing Hard Ball or … Frisbee

Posted by: Joanne Gallagher  :  Category: Pets

Dog chase ball. Dog retrieves ball. Do it again and again and again. Do you know a dog who is obsessed with playing fetch?

Rather than chasing a ball, some dogs prefer their “babies”. This is usually a soft plush dog toy that brings security and comfort to dogs. Some dogs prefer docile rather than athletic interaction.

Herding breeds as well as retrievers tend to have a natural instinct to chase and retrieve an object. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers enjoy playing fetch. In addition to fetch, many dogs also enjoy catching a disc in mid air.

The Border Collie and German Shorthaired Pointer are two of the best Disc dogs. They have a sharp alertness that helps to estimate the path of the Frisbee. Disc Dogs are skilled with the physical agility to easily jump to catch a Frisbee in mid air.

World Champion disc dogs are amazing to watch. The dog handlers and dogs have a natural rhythm of throwing a disc and graceful jumps and catches. Frisbee dogs can be seen during half time shows or at your local dog park or in your own backyard.

Steps to training a dog to play fetch can be a dog owner/dog bonding experience. Begin by throwing a ball or favorite dog toy and running with your dog to retrieve it. Sometimes dogs need a little extra coaxing. Putting a dog treat inside the ball adds a little incentive to fetch the ball. When your dog picks up the ball take the dog treat out of the slit and reward your dog with the treat, words of praise and a belly rub.

Teaching your dog to catch a disc in mid air is different than playing fetch. When you train your dog to catch a Frisbee, the dog should only receive a reward when the disc is caught in mid air; otherwise they will confuse fetch training and disc training. Fetch is retrieving an object from the ground, catching a Frisbee in the air requires different training and rewarding.

Teaching your dog new tricks requires a lot of repetition, attention and most of all trust. Never throw a disc or ball at your dog. Through training, play and affection the relationship between a dog and dog owner is priceless!

Some dogs have an abundant ofenergy when it comes to chasing a ball. It is a pure pleasure of having a ball in their mouth and a bonus when someone throws the ball for them to retrieve! Joanne Gallagher suggests browsing to Jake’s Dog House for exiting dog toys.

Boxer Dog Adoption: A Quick Guide To Adopting A Boxer Dog

Posted by: Dermot Hogan  :  Category: Pets

How much do you know about Boxer dog adoption? Unless you have experience of it then the answer is likely to be not all that much, but then you may also be questioning why you need to know so much. Adopting a dog is a big decision for any household and one that is often taken all too lightly but there are certain factors you need to consider for Boxer dog adoption that may not occur to you straight away. There is a lot to consider and the information outlined below should help you to ensure that you are making the right decision.

General Facts

Before you consider Boxer dog adoption, there are a few things that you need to know about the breed. Firstly, Boxers are incredibly well built dogs and are considered to be medium to large dogs so they do need a lot of space. They are also incredibly lively and energetic so you will need to provide exercise on a daily basis, as well as have copious amounts of patience when it comes to training. Although Boxers do pick up instruction quite easily, by nature they are loving and excitable dogs so you may find that training becomes a little too much sometimes! Overall though, Boxer dog adoption is made easy by virtue of how friendly and loving the breed can be.

Is Your Hose Right for a Boxer?

The interesting thing about adopting a boxer is how well the can assimilate into to any type of household. As a breed they are very capable of living with kids and other pets. Even with cat’s and young children they can cheerfully co-exist. You will need to train from early on to behave a certain way around young kids. Otherwise they may get too excited and potentially knock them over. There are of course certain for who it may not be such a good idea to adopt a boxer dog. First, those who are advanced in years and not quite so active as they used to be. Second, people who don’t have a lot of free space in their homes. The elderly might have trouble giving a boxer the active lifestyle need to lead. Cramped quarters won’t be good for a boxer because they need the space to move around. A boxer dog in either of these circumstances will become a destructive force in the household.

More Points to Think About

Of all the points you should think about before adopting a boxer dog, the most vital part is where you decide to get the dog from. Shelters are one option where you can find a boxer with no owner. Also a well known and reputable breeder may be high on your list. Shelters will always have evaluated the dog in advance and giving a good home to an abandoned boxer is a very kind deed. Breeders are good idea, but it’s not as easy as you might think. Make sure you get a good breeder preferably one registered with the akc. Medical info for your new dog is a must have. Your new puppy should have been living in a sanitary place with mother who was well taken care of. If any of what you see from a breeder seems off, don’t go through with it. Keep looking till you find a decent breeder and have found a puppy who fits the above criteria, then you will have a happy adoption.

Your Basic Reference For Training A Retriever

Posted by: Bruce Johnson  :  Category: Pets

Golden Retrievers make amazing pets. If you’ve decided to bring a new Golden Retriever home, you won’t regret it. But every dog requires training, so take a look at the following tips and you and your new best friend will be on your way in no time!

Behavior is very important for family pets, especially if you have children. You’ll want your dog to behave himself around company as well. House training and leash walking are two very important keys to behavior.

Some breeds are naturally adept at skills that can help humans. Golden Retrievers are very good at herding, hunting, and even search and rescue once they are properly trained. If you are ever in an emergency situation, you’ll be very glad you worked with your dog on search and rescue activities!

Some people don’t really understand what obedience means to a dog. Obedient does not mean yelling at your dog, it means training the dog proper behaviors, including listening to your commands. If you focus on proper behavior training, your dog will naturally become obedient.

You’ll want your dog to behave well and obey all of your commands, even when there are distractions and the dog would rather go chase something. When your dog becomes well-behaved enough to listen to your commands in spite of distractions, you have an obedient dog.

If your new Golden Retriever is a puppy, he’ll come home with the puppy habits of barking and chewing for no apparent reason. This is normal. Buy lots of chew toys for him and be very firm in teaching him what items are his toys to chew and which items are off limits!

There are many classes available for new dog owners. You can take your dog with you to these classes, and both puppy and owner will learn, which will help you down the road. You’ll need to understand the basics of training, too!

Once your dog has mastered basic obedience, you can decide if you are satisfied or if you want to keep going with additional classes.
